Meningococcal meningitis vaccines: what's on the horizon?
The future is bright when it comes to vaccines that help protect against meningococcal meningitis.
The situation today...
Fortunately, there is vaccination that can provide protection against meningococcal meningitis.
For example, a vaccine is available in Europe and Canada to protect infants from strain C of
the Neisseria meningitidis bacteria—which can lead to meningococcal meningitis. Plus, there
are vaccines in the United States that can protect against the most common strains of
Neisseria meningitidis (A, C, Y, and W-135).
However, there's still an unmet need. Throughout the world, there's no vaccine available that covers all strains of Neisseria meningitidis. Plus in the United States, there's currently no vaccine that protects infants from any of the strains of the Neisseria meningitidis bacteria.

What the future holds...
Thankfully, new vaccines are on the horizon that may be able to help fill
the current void. And if approved, they will help protect against more types of Neisseria meningitidis.
